Situation in Rivers state exemplifies that which exposes democracy-illiteracy of Nigerians. The politicians know that we are not really practising democracy but a civilian rulership system that uses dubious voting system which is so dubious that it undermines the involvement of the people it supposed to be created by, for and of. Not only that the politicians rarely make reference to the people, the people in large numbers are so illeterate about democracy to the extent that they treat the politicians like demigods. The politicians nor the educated people do not even feel the need for the people to be educated about democracy and why it should always be about the people - they might not know any better. The politicians take advantage of this while the educated class keep quiet about it. Our people are just so enslaved, disenfranchised and impoverished in their own country - a daylight robbery.

I live in Canada, and it saddens me to read stories of fraud and probe in Nigeria. Probe hardly ever happens in Canada. Not because the people are HOLY, but 'probe' as we call it in Nigeria is inbuilt in the system. AUDITING happens every inch of any project, Government services and processes. AUDITING is concentric and ongoing. Everything must be accounted for. The slightest misuse of fund or material, or dereliction of duty becomes instantly obvious. The process is transparent. And result is available to anyone who cares to see. Unfortunately, we are still practicing antiquated system in economy, civil service structure, legal system, etc. Every system in Nigeria seems backward. It would be unthinkable here for Yahya Bello and Ikpeazu to still be walking free in Canada. In fact, they can't pull off their type of fraud in Canada. The system is designed to prevent it.
